Statement of Intent
I intend to create a 2000s inspired style magazine alongside a corresponding website. My project will focus on the romanticisation and revival of 2000s teen culture, combining both mainstream and alternative aesthetics. The magazine will be primarily targeted at a young female audience, while also including a male cover variant to appeal to a broader demographic, including those who identify with more masculine presentation or prefer male-led representation. Additionally, I will target a secondary audience of adults who grew up reading magazines in the 2000s, as my products will evoke a strong sense of nostalgia.
In terms of representation, my magazine will explore the construction of femininity through both soft and powerful aesthetics. I aim to challenge traditional representations by blending hyper-feminine 2000s influences such as Juicy Couture, Victoria’s Secret, Lipsy, and Ed Hardy with alternative subcultural styles including punk, emo, and indie aesthetics. This combination allows femininity to be represented as diverse and fluid rather than fixed. My magazine will also incorporate a range of music influences, drawing on both mainstream and alternative artists such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, Radiohead, Weezer, Joan Jett, Lit, and She Wants Revenge, reinforcing the hybrid identity of the brand.
For media language, I plan to experiment with both cluttered and minimalist layouts, taking inspiration from 2000s Japanese and Korean magazine design. This will allow me to explore how layout, typography, colour palettes, and imagery construct meaning and appeal to audiences. I intend to use bold, nostalgic colours, decorative fonts, and layered visuals to create an authentic 2000s aesthetic, while also incorporating more minimal designs to provide contrast within the same brand identity. My website will extend this visual style through interactive features and scroll-based layouts, maintaining consistency while adapting to digital conventions.
From an audience perspective, my project will aim to balance nostalgia with contemporary relevance. The primary audience of teenagers and young adults are currently engaging with 2000s revival trends through fashion, music, and social media, making this concept highly relevant. The secondary audience will be those who experienced the 2000s firsthand, allowing the magazine to function as both a modern and nostalgic product.
In terms of industry, my magazine will be positioned as an independent, niche publication that reflects current trends in aesthetic-led and digital-first media. The accompanying website will act as an extension of the brand, offering additional content such as features, playlists, and visual editorials. This reflects contemporary media convergence, where print and online platforms work together to engage audiences.
Overall, my project will create a visually distinctive and culturally hybrid magazine brand that merges 2000s nostalgia with modern media trends, appealing to a diverse audience while exploring identity, style, and representation across both print and digital formats.
